The U3A is an international organisation which was started in France in 1972, with the first British U3A being formed in 1982. There are over 1010 local U3A groups with over 385,000 members throughout the UK.

Up Holland & District U3A was formed in 2005 and celebrated its 10th birthday in May 2015. We have over 850 members and have grown by 60% in the past five years. Members may participate in a choice of more than 50 interest groups, providing a range of activities varying from academic, through practical and leisure, to purely social.

We are based in the picturesque village of Up Holland on the eastern edge of West Lancashire, situated between Skelmersdale and the Orrell area of Wigan, with easy access from the M58 and M6.

A meeting for all members is held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, at St Teresa’s Club in College Road (WN8 0PY), between 9:45am and 12 noon, with refreshments available. This is also an opportunity to chat with friends, talk to group leaders and get an update on events, followed by a speaker presentation on an interesting subject.

We also have a coffee morning on the 1st Thursday of each month, at the same venue, and also starting at 9:45am. You can pop in and see friends, book tickets/places for events and generally find out what is happening, but there is no speaker at this meeting. Usually one or two local organisations set up their stands to talk to members on a one to one basis to give help and advice on various matters.

As a U3A group, we are committed to the principles of self-help learning and mutual aid, and willingly share our skills and talents to improve our knowledge in a friendly and enjoyable way. We create the opportunity for educational, leisure and recreational activities for all who are no longer in full time employment and have a wish to get involved and share interests. Together, these opportunities keep us mentally and physically active, allow us make new friendships and to volunteer to help each other. We have no political or religious affiliations

Our idea of retirement is about fun and enjoyment whilst keeping body and mind active. All we ask our members to do is “Reach out and Embrace U3A.” This can be a life changing experience.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 2019

This year’s AGM will again be held at St Teresa’s Club on Tuesday 21st May 2019 and is free to all paid-up members.

Elections

As agreed in our constitution, the whole Executive Committee must stand down annually and then, if eligible, stand for re-election by the members. This year some Officers and Committee Members will not be standing for re-election, so this is an ideal opportunity for members to join the Committee and assist in the running of Up Holland U3A.

Any members interested in standing for election can get more information on committee roles by contacting the Secretary, Beth Turton, or any present committee member. There is also a leaflet explaining the Committee roles available on the Publicity Desk.

Nomination forms are available from the Secretary and must be returned by Tuesday 16th April 2019.

You do not need previous experience to join the committee, help will be at hand, just come along and see. Members who wish to attend a committee meeting as a visitor before making the decision to stand for election should contact the Chair.
