Singing for Fun
Leader: Jean Baxendale.
Wednesday, 12 September 2018.
Twenty members of the Singing for Fun group attended the N.W Region’s Big Sing in Manchester. What a wonderful day! On arrival we received copies of the songs to be used and were welcomed by Gill Russell, NW Area Trustee. 147 U3A members from 20 U3As around the region, including Yorkshire, Lutterworth, Leicestershire, Milton Keynes and Burton on Trent, with sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones and a few basses, all joined in with enthusiasm. A short period of voice warming noises, hands, arms, shoulders and hip shaking manoeuvres, loosening everything up, broke the ice and ended up in laughter.
Our conductor, Stuart Overington, who works with the Hallé Orchestra and tutors many choral groups, demonstrated pieces in a beautiful voice which moved through several octaves.
He led us through part songs, adding layer on layer as we sang, whilst learning to enunciate vowels properly to project the words. All the practise took place in a light-hearted fashion but with enough seriousness to impress the importance and worth of good preparation.
Following the lunch break we resumed the rehearsals and then sang all the songs through properly at the end of the session. We came away feeling elated and, although tired, sorry it had ended. Hopefully we will get another chance at a later date. Many thanks to Jean Baxendale for organising our day
